Wheelchair Service Delivery Training: Advanced

The Advanced Professional wheelchair service delivery course builds on the basic and intermediate level training courses which are aligned with the World Health Organization Wheelchair Service Training Package: Basic and Intermediate.

The course teaches participants how to assess for, prescribe and fit wheelchairs and posture support devices (PSDs) to users who require complex modifications and/or posture support solutions.

Advanced wheelchair users include users:

• With moderate to severe flexible postural deviations (flexible to neutral or flexible partway to neutral);
• With moderate to severe fixed postural deviations. The loss of joint range is more than 25% loss of normal joint range;
• With severe and fixed persistent postural asymmetry;
• Who require complex, custom postural support solutions; and
• Who are no longer able to sit.

The learning objectives of the course will help you:

• Assess for, prescribe and fit posture support devices and/or custom postural support solutions appropriate to user with complex postural support needs including: back support systems, head rests, tray tables, straps and other forms of postural support including custom moulded seats; and
• Gain an understanding and become comfortable with the twenty-four-hour management approach as a wheelchair service strategy in particular for users who are no longer able to sit.

Methodology

An interactive five-day course that includes:

• Theory;
• Practical sessions; and
• Clinical work with wheelchair users.
