WHEELCHAIR SERVICE DELIVERY TRAINING FOR INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

Rehab Skills Lab provides wheelchair service delivery training to industry professionals in South Africa as well as internationally. Our courses adhere to World Health Organisation guidelines for less-resourced settings but are, crucially, tailored for the South African context. These are designed to give participants holistic and practical know-how to help them render a service specific to their wheelchair users’ postural, environmental and functional needs.

Fundamental principles are covered from day one to four of the basic course and day one to three of the intermediate and advanced courses.

If you miss one or more of these sessions, you will not have the required knowledge and skills for subsequent sessions and/or clinical work with wheelchair users.

We therefore encourage attendees to not schedule appointments during that week or, rather, to book an alternative course should they be unable to reschedule the appointment.

It is possible to present training courses at your organisation. We offer three levels of training – basic, intermediate and advanced.

Each course is five days.

The host facility must be willing and able to accommodate participants and provide a theoretical and practical/clinical area as well as users, necessary devices, cushions, foam and consumables.

Costs may vary between different venues as the travel and accommodation of trainers need to be factored in as well as return courier costs for devices and resources that you do not have available.

We use the devices on the national tender as the baseline to train the principles of wheelchairs.

In addition, many facilities do not have the necessary basics such as cushions, foam, glue, straps, Velcro etc. These can be provided but will affect the overall cost.

Contact Elsje and Dietlind at admin@rehabskillslab.co.za to discuss.

Although based on the same principles, our basic course includes wider content and a deeper level of clinical reasoning than that of the WHO.

The latter is designed for undergraduates, grassroots workers and volunteers.

The intermediate course is an extended version of the RSL basic course. It is therefore advisable to attend our basic first.

You can do the intermediate immediately thereafter as you would not be required to work the recommended minimum of six months before signing up.

We offer the WHO Basic Wheelchair Service Training Package on request. It is designed for undergraduates, grassroots workers and volunteers.

However we accept non-clinicians on the RSL basic course if the person plays an active role in your seating service. This person must be accompanied by a therapist from the your organisation. As the RSL course includes wider content and deeper clinical reasoning, it remains the responsibility of the attending therapist to support his/her colleague.

Fundamental principles are covered from day one to four of the basic course and day one to three of the intermediate and advanced courses. If you miss one or more of these sessions, we recommend that you withdraw from the course but reregister and repeat it. If you miss the clinical days (last day of the basic and last two days of the intermediate and advanced courses), you can submit a case study for each day missed for review to complete the course requirements and receive your CPD certificate.

No. Your CPD points will be uploaded by RSL.
