Experience & Activities
Cape Town physiotherapist Athene Irving loves the variety her profession offers.
“We work across many different sites, from acute hospital work to home visits, and there is so much interdisciplinary teamwork involved. No two days are ever the same,” she says.
Ironic career choice
Athene, who holds a BSc in Physio from Stellenbosch University and MSc in Physio from the University of Cape Town, takes special interest in neurological and vestibular rehabilitation as well as falls prevention.
She finds it quite ironic that her career path led her in this direction given she has “always been a little bit clumsy”.
Meaningful difference
The Basic and Intermediate wheelchair service delivery training courses she presents for Rehab Skills Lab take a systematic approach to seating, emphasising thoroughness and ensuring no steps are missed.
“In South Africa there is very little undergraduate training when it comes to seating, yet you can make such a meaningful difference in a person’s quality of life as well as the lives of their caregivers,” she says.
Being a Capetonian, it stands to reason that a lot of her downtime is spent enjoying the mountains and beaches with friends and family.
